NYCON Partners with Senator Schumer to Inform Nonprofits of Recent IRS Revocations
 and Offer Assistance

June 23, 2011 –Albany NY -- The New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) is offering active nonprofits who lost their tax status with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) access to special programs in order to reapply. NYCON, who has provided this type of assistance for newly forming nonprofits for over 20 years, is discounting their fees by more than 60% for small groups. Until organizations decide how to proceed, and in order to maintain continuity of services, NYCON can also offer assistance as a fiscal sponsor. The IRS has also announced a special offer to organizations with gross annual receipts under $50,000 that reduces the reapplication filing fee to $100.

In 2007 Congress passed the Pension Protection Act, changing reporting regulations and requiring all nonprofits to file a form annually with the Internal Revenue Service. After a 3 year education and outreach process to nonprofits, the IRS recently revoked over 19,400 exemptions. For the full list of those nonprofits, please visit www.nycon.org and click on the links in the Special Alert section.

"We continue to be a resource to nonprofits in New York State. NYCON encourages active organizations that have been revoked to take advantage of our special programs designed to assist affected groups," said Doug Sauer, CEO of NYCON. “In addition to the reduced rates for our filing services NYCON is reminding organizations that – through our subsidiary, Innovative Charitable Initiatives (ICI) – we can offer temporary fiscal sponsorship as well as long-term solutions to help run your programs safely and affordably."

NYCON would also like to extend a special thank you to US Senator Chuck Schumer for his dedication to the nonprofit community and assistance in helping to conduct outreach on this issue. The Senator’s recent press release aptly notes: over 106,000 nonprofit organizations in New York State employ over 1.2 million New Yorkers and conduct a wide range of essential services that touch the everyday lives of us all.
